The other day when I was browsing through a heap of very old books which were heaped in a neglected corner and left to rot, I found this very enlightening book titled " The ladder of life". The book was published in 1951...Yes it's really old. This book was a property of one of my late grand fathers who, we as little children used to call " Nuwara Seeyaa".
This knowledge about the original owner of the book took me some ten or eight years back in my memory lane, to the times I enjoyed with this very merry soul. Nuwara Seeyaa was a brother of my paternal grand father, meaning the uncle of my father. He resided in Mahanuwara (Kandy), which was the cause of us calling him Nuwara Seeyaa.
The memories of him are associated with happiness. Always an active person, he never missed a chance to crack a joke or two whenever the chance permitted. Used to chew beetle every now and then, which sometimes drew an angry retort from my mother. What I liked in him most was his never dying enthusiasm, and his passion to see us educated. When he faced with some trouble a pain in heart, he used to remark "shah shah" which was his trade mark.
Nuwara Seeya was an educated person. Actually he was the most accomplished one in my fathers family academically. Though he passed his A/L with flying colours his family had no means to support his university education. So he got into job in postal service and retired as a respected civil servant in the area.
Some years back he died of cancer. I heard that he suffered a little, which is not always the case with cancer patients. I could't attend his funeral. But I'll remember him forever not as a feeble man but a man of confidence and energy, which is certainly the way he would have wanted us to remember him.

Freedom
If I can stop
Thinking about the future
If I can stop
Thinking about the past
If I can think
What I want me to think
Then I'll consider my self
free as I could be....
If I can throw
The caution to the wind
Sail over and over
not conceding
to the whims and whispers
of my own
Then I'll consider my self
Free as I could be
If I can sleep
whenever I want
If I can wake up
Any time I want
If I can live without
The burdens of my expectations
Then I'll consider myself
Free as I could be
If nobody questions me
If nobody whispers in my ears
If they mind their own
without watching for my mistakes
Then I'll consider my self
Free as I could be
If I can die
In the gutter on the road side
And no one bothers to search over my accounts
but just bury me
or burn me
Then I'll consider my self
free as I could be....................................

My secret love
I love her so much
Every day I think of her
Every moment I care for her
She is my happiness
She is the source of my delight
When I am away
I can't help worrying about her
I want to be by her side
I want to immerse in her beauty
I want to touch her
Tenderly
You must be wondering
Who is she
She is my dear farm
At the barn buddy
In the facebook

slow down
slow down lad
slow down lad
don't run so fast
just calm down
just take a breath
and take it in full
feel it flow through
cooling you down
now tell me lad
running after something
huh! I guessed right
now listen to me lad
you have missed too much
on your way to neverland
think my boy think
whether is it worth the effort
let me give you an advice
go slowly..I mean really slow
coz that way you'll go far
enjoying the ride
look on to your right
see the blossoming petals
look on to your left
see the beauty of the seas
look on to your god
see the glittering hopes
do not get into the pack
keep your straight back
and think of my advice
please don't rush your life
slow down lad
don't run so fast
just calm down
just take a breath
and take it in full
feel it flow through
cooling you down

Psychology and the students
The mental disorders among the students are on the up......
I was quite alarmed to read this caption in a newspaper. It is understandable that the pressure on the younger generation in today is quite unbearable. Though we cannot pinpoint these are the exact reasons for them to become victims of mental illnesses...we can be sure there are a whole lot of them which we are not yet aware of..
In a culture like Sri lanka there is always pressure behind the students to excell in their studies. They are usually compelled to follow in prescribed subjects whether they like it or not. They are expected to become doctors, engineers, accountants and lawyers. But most of the students find it hard to cope with the subjects forced upon them.
Some bright students also may become victims of mental pressure because they are expected to perform better and continue their academic performance. The peer pressure is too much to bear for some of them.
If we can reform the education system in Sri lanka to a system which identifies the talents of students and show them the path in those respective feilds we can be more successful..Some students are talented in sports than in academics. Some students have an inborn talent for art and literature than science. Some students have talent in photography. It is the responsibility of the authorities to take a complete U turn from this current education system and move towards a much more dynamic one.
Otherwise there would be much more dire consequences.....

A book I'm reading these days
mmm......recently I got this book "Lord of the flies" by William Golding.
"A plane crashes on a desert island. The only survivors are a group of school boys. At first they enjoy the their freedom and celebrate the absence of grown-ups. But the sense of disorder begins to affect them and irrational fears take over. The world of cricket, homework, classes and all the extracurricular activities in school seems to be a faraway dream against the more pressing reality of sheer survival-and the appearance of a terrifying beast who haunts their dreams. Violence takes over, the group is broken up into factions, each determined to wipe out the other. What Golding tries to show in the novel is that violence is built into our system, into our genes and in our blood, and that age has little to do when the innate violence would erupt."

retrospect
I sometimes say to my self "how unlucky i am". do not take this as a retrospect of a dying man, no, it is a flash back of a youth who just passed 20 years of his life.well ! it is mentioned in Buddhism that having a birth as a human being is in itself a great feat. But when we come to this world, various hurdles are presented to us by ourselves as i believe it.We set targets ,goals and make a run for it.nonstop marathon. we are what we think. Most human beings fail in their attempt to achieve their own set targets. few would succeed. But are they satisfied, answer is no. as humans we have an unquenchable desire.Take my life as an example, mine was mainly based on achieving educational success, most children would crave to have the chances i had. I know it. I was expected to do my studies well and enter to the medical faculty. Then I thought that if I passed this exam[a/l] my burden would be over. now i know that i'm wrong. Now I want to become a doctor, a distinguished one. Will it be over then, surely not.so basically when we make plans, when we ponder about our future, when we dream, we make our burden unbearable, which paves the way for our failure. The failure will break some, those who do not break will become more strong and renew their run. So,if everything has a purpose, what is expected of us as human beings. The society at large expects us to continue the running till our dying moment. But wise men, sheds all their worldly bonds and seek to attain inner peace.I think the purpose of having a human life is to find an answer to the question "how do we stop this never ending race" because if our worldly achievements bring us not solace but more and more hurdles there we can find no satisfaction. DO NOT DWELL IN THE PAST AND DO NOT PONDER ABOUT THE FUTURE, CONCENTRATE ON THE PRESENT MOMENT.[quote: Lord Buddha]

MY THOUGHTS
I always thought writing was easy. But when you want to write some thing you realize how difficult it is. This is a common problem not only to novices like ourselves but also to prolific writers.
Recently i got my hands on to very fascinating book named the "Human Zoo".actually what I'm reading is the Sinhala translation of it.The original literature was done by the zoologist Desmond Morris. The author successfully tries to convince the reader that "man" is essentially an animal, and whatever the advances we have made today we still haven't been able to conquer the inner animal tendency and the common tribal behavior. He also points out though the man has evolved tremendously as a super tribe he has not evolved biologically to bare the great burden put upon by the civilization. He also speaks about self imposed restrictions upon the human being and tries to logically point that we are no better than some caged animals. But nevertheless he is not altogether pessimistic. He shows us that wen use our infinite brain power to solve these problems to some extent. I think reading this book worth its time.

life
life is but a flowing river,
sometimes tranquil ,
sometimes harsh
like a river
has a humble beginning
grows with distance
always a paradox
the depth suggested by calmness
but to be of some use
it must be controlled
that is why we build up
dams
so they say
but is it true
may be
may be it is true.
